December 5, 2018 Week 1, Day 4 A child is born
Week
I: Jesus came at a specific time in history
Day
4:
“For a child is born to
us, a son is given to us; upon his shoulder
dominion rests.
They name him
Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever,
Prince of Peace.
His dominion is vast and
forever peaceful. Upon David’s throne, and
over his kingdom, which he confirms
and sustains. By judgment and
justice, both
now and forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will
do this!”
(Isaiah 9:5-6)
This is the second of the
three Emmanuel prophesies found in Isaiah.
What does the prophet tell us
about this future Messiah? Isaiah
prophesies that the Messiah will be born to
be a king, whose purpose
is to fulfill the Davidic Covenant. God’s promise to
David was that his
kingdom will last forever through the faithfulness of God.
As a king he will guide us in
ways that are incomprehensible for his
counsel will be wise and truthful more
so than the wisdom of Solomon.
Jesus himself testified to this. “At the judgment the queen of the south
something greater than
Solomon here.” (Matthew 12:42)
The title God-Hero
is an early indication of the divine and human
natures of the future Messiah.
