Thought of the Day Advent Week 1 Jesus came
Week
I: Jesus came at a specific time in history
Day
5:
“My
mercy is established forever; my faithfulness will stand as long as the
heavens.I have made a covenant with
my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: I will make your dynasty stand forever and establish your throne through all ages.” (Ps 89:3-5)
This prophetic statement
found in the Psalms and other books of the Old Testament was confirmed by the
angel Gabriel at the time of the Annunciation.
“Do not be afraid,
Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord
God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house
of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” (Luke 1: 30-33)The coming of Jesus not only
fulfills the promise of God but it is a God’s mercy towards David and the
Israelites who sinned and broke their covenant with God. God’s faithfulness to his promises in
stark contrast to our unfaithfulness in our relationship with God.
While the physical Davidic
Kingdom was destroyed, the true kingdom of God has been established by Jesus. This kingdom will have no end. This is the
kingdom we are praying for when we pray the Our Father.
Come, Lord Jesus, come.
