Thought of the Day May 31, 2019 Baptism in the Spirit is for all
The grace of BIS is both personal and communal. It is given for
one's personal renewal as well as the renewal of the Church. In Acts 2 on the Day of Pentecost the Church
was born and the Apostles, Mary, and 120 were baptized in the HS as promised by
Jesus. In Acts 4 Peter and John were arrested and threatened for proclaiming
that Jesus, in whose name the crippled beggar was healed, was Lord and Messiah.
They returned to the community of believers and prayed for a greater gift of
boldness. (Acts 4:29-31)
Over the centuries individuals as well as the Church have needed
renewal and prayed for such a renewal and revival. Again and again God
responded through a fresh release of the HS and his many gifts.
Historically, Pope Leo XIII, under the lead of the HS and the
confirming urging of a religious sister wrote an encyclical, asked the
universal Church to pray a prayer invoking a fresh outpouring of the HS on
individuals, the Church and the world. He dedicated the 20th century to the HS. This renewal of the BIS first broke out among
our Protestant brethren. Then in the early
1960's Pope St John XIII called the Church to pray for a fresh
outpouring of the HS so that a new Pentecost can happen today. Our faithful God
truly broke through with the teachings flowing from the Second Vatican Council
and the fresh outpouring of the HS renewal of people through the BIS. One
manifestation is the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, as a result of which it is
estimated that over 100 million baptized and confirmed Catholics have been
renewed in and by the power of the HS.
Since that fresh manifestation almost 50 years ago the words of 1
Cor 12:4-11 have and are being fulfilled. Many people are moving in the various
gifts of the Spirit at different times. There have been new ministries which
have risen: healing, deliverance, intercessors prayer, music, etc. There have
been many who have and are doing works as apostles, prophets, evangelists,
pastors, teachers, service to the poor, administrators.
