Thought of the Day June 5, 2019 Be renewed
Baptism in the Spirit "is not
an event in and of itself but rather the beginning of a journey whose aim is
the profound renewal of life" of each Christian and of the whole Church.
Ephesians 4:23-24: “Be renewed in
the spirit of your minds and . . .
clothe yourselves with the new self.
Romans 12:2 And do not choose to
be conformed to this age, but instead choose to be renewed in the newness of
your mind, so that you may choose to do the will of God: what is good, pleasing
and perfect.
Renewing ourselves” means striving
to have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had (see Philippians 2:5), striving
for a “new heart.”
How is this to be done? Titus, addresses that precise issue. He says
that God “saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done,
but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the
Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5).
It is the action of the Lord that
renews us. It is the distinct role and mission of the Holy Spirit to sanctify
us and to empower us with the specific gifts which helps us to be holy as the Lord
is holy.
