Thought of the Day April 29, 2020 Spirit of Truth
We continue our reflection on the Holy Spirit as our Advocate. Jesus gives us an insight into the role of the Holy Spirit when he says: "But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming' (John 16:13)".
Jesus himself is the way, the truth and the life. The Spirit reveals to us the truth that will set us free and lead us to full life in Christ. This is, first of all, experienced by the Church, which can not teach error in regards to faith and morals because of the Spirit's guidance. This is the mark of infallibility.
But secondly, the Spirit will guide us to know and live in the truth. That doesn't mean that we are infallible. But it means that if we remain in union with Jesus and his Church, we will come to a clarity of the truth. There is only one truth. Difference of opinions is not the truth. Convictions that divide do not reflect the truth. The Spirit will teach us and lead us to the truth, if we are obedient and humble, seeking only the will of God. "Come, Holy Spirit, come!"
