Thought of the Day May 29, 2020 Come, Holy Spirit, come!
As we
prepare to celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit this Sunday, we ask for
fresh infilling of the Spirit in our lives. At Easter we rejoiced in the
Resurrection of Jesus and renewed our baptismal promises, recommitting
ourselves as disciples of the Lord. On Pentecost we have another grace moment
to renew our resolve to be witnesses of Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit.
How can we
prepare for this renewal? The Apostles have shown us the way and Peter in his
first homily on Pentecost confirmed the process. After Jesus ascended to the
Father, the disciples went back to the Upper Room, waiting for the promise of
the Spirit. During this first “novena”, they repented of their sins and
failures. They acknowledged Jesus as
their Lord and Savior, surrendering their lives to serve him. They yearned for
the coming of the Holy Spirit through prayer.
On Pentecost
their prayer was heard. The were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began
praising God for his mighty deeds.
After Peter
proclaimed to the large crowd outside the Upper Room that Jesus was both Lord
and Messiah, they asked what they should do. Peter said: repent, be baptized in
the name of Jesus and expect the gift of the Spirit.
