Thought of the Day May 7, 2020 Sealed with the Spirit
Besides receiving the anointing of the Holy Spirit in Baptism by which we share in God's divine life, we are again anointed with the oil of Chrism when we are confirmed. Jesus set the pattern for us in his humanity. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary. He was full of the Holy Spirit from his conception. In his humanity he shared in the divine life of the Spirit, as we did in baptism.
Later, Jesus received a fresh anointing, infusion of the Spirit at the time of his public acceptance of his call to be the Messiah, when he was baptized in the Jordan by John. He was being anointed and empowered for his role as Messiah. In this role he would confront the power of the Devil, manifest the Father's love and providential care through signs and wonders and become the sacrifice that would saved the world.
When we publicly commit ourselves to embrace the faith, professed for us in baptism, and are ready to be witnesses of Jesus, we present ourselves for the Sacrament of Confirmation. We are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, with access to all his gifts for the service of others. This is the anointing that the Apostles received on the day of Pentecost and received in a fresh, new way later. In both cases, they prayed for the coming of the Spirit, as we do when we pray: "Come, Holy Spirit, come!"
