Thought of the Day May 8, 2020 Fire of the Holy Spirit
One of the symbols associated with the Holy Spirit
is that of fire. In the New Testament, this is introduced by John the Baptist when he proclaimed that the One who comes after him “will baptize you with the Holy
Spirit and with fire.” (Mt 3:11) Then in the next verse John gives his
understanding of what this fire is intended for. "His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing
floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with
unquenchable fire." Jesus builds on this idea when he said: “I
came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled!” This
work of the Spirit was identified by Jesus when he said: “When the Spirit comes
he will convict the world of sin."
As fire is used to purify the iron from all
dross, so the Holy Spirit is given to us to purify us from all that hinders us
from sharing fully in God’s divine life. It is by the fire of his love that we
are brought to conviction and repentance for our sins. Ask for this grace
daily, so that the fire of purification can become the fire of love within us. “Come,
Holy Spirit, come!”
