Thought of the Day August 11, 2020 Choose life or choose death

As God the Father loves us by creating us in his own image and likeness and as the Son of God loves us by giving his life in ransom for ours, so the Holy Spirit loves us by sanctifying and anointing us for mission. St. Paul tells us that “the love of God is poured forth in our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us” (Romans 5:5). We are Temples of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:21). Like Jesus who promised to be with us always till the end, so he tells us that the Spirit, the gift of the Father, will be with us and within us (John 14:17). God pours forth the gift of the Spirit generously. He doesn’t ration the gift of his Spirit (John 3:32)

We merit none of the above. None of this is due to us out of justice. Rather, each is a revealed attestation of the unconditional love and mercy of God. Once created, I will always exist. But in what state? Once redeemed, I am not guaranteed salvation. I must respond. Once sanctified, I may not remain in God’s life by choice.

God has shown us his love, even before we responded. But without an appropriate response on our part we will show that we are not grateful. Thus, instead of being with God eternally, we will be in everlasting darkness of self-blaming regret and condemnation. The decision is ours. As Moses told the Israelites, so God tells us: I have given you love. Choose life or choose death.
