Thought of the Day September 30, 2020 Broken promises

By 8:54 AM

"Our life is full of brokenness--broken relationships, broken promises, broken expectations. How can we live with that brokenness without becoming bitter and resentful except by returning again and again to God's faithful presence in our lives" (Henri Nowen).

this brokenness comes as a result of sin, original and personal--our own and others. Throughout the history of salvation, as found in the scriptures, is the constant theme of the Chosen People breaking their covenanted relationship with God. At the same time, we see the parallel theme of God's fidelity to h is promises. In each instance, it is God's intervention that reconciles and restores this relationship, only to be broken again by a later generation.

We came into existence not in relationship with God. In his mercy, the death and resurrection of Jesus was applied to us, when we were baptized. We were adopted as sons and daughters. But how often  have we, like our spiritual ancestors, broken our covenant? How often has God restored us to himself? Only God can heal our brokenness.  We should be more upset with our broken promises to God then the broken promises of others to us.
