Thought of the Day June 15, 2021 Cultivate a spirit of joy
"How necessary it is to
cultivate a spirit of joy. It is a psychological truth that the physical acts
of reverence and devotion make one feel devout. The courteous gesture increases
one's respect for others. To act lovingly is to begin to feel loving, and
certainly to act joyfully brings joy to others which in turn makes one feel
joyful. I believe we are called to the duty of delight" (Dorothy Day).
To be joyful is a choice, just as to be gloomy is a choice. The joy of the world revolves around the pleasures of the world. The joy that God offers us revolves around the truth that sets us free. What is that truth? To know that we are loved for who we are! We see that joy, many times, in the relationship between engaged couples preparing for marriage. Their joy is manifested in their mutual love. Knowing that I am loved by God and that I love God should bring forth within me a joy that delights me and witnesses to others.
