Thought of the Day April 1, 2022 Mary joins Jesus in his suffering for us
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
Mary speaks
no words. No words are needed. Her place is to join him in his total gift of
himself, as the sacrificial Passover Lamb. The idea of Mary being united to her son’s
sacrifice is soberly and solemnly expressed in a Vatican Council II text:
“The
Blessed Virgin advanced in her pilgrimage of faith, and faithfully persevered
in her union with her Son unto the cross, where she stood, in keeping with the
divine plan grieving exceedingly wither only begotten Son, uniting her with a
maternal heart with his sacrifice, and lovingly consenting to the immolation of
this Victim which she herself had brought forth.”
She
suffered in her heart what her son suffered in his body. Did she quietly join
Jesus in praying the same psalm, which she had taught Jesus in his early years?
Dear
Mother, stand by me as I go through life and feel the effects of my own sins.
Though your son was perfect, I am not. My sin leaves me isolated and desolate,
sorrowful and crushed. May your motherly intercession continually remind me
that the Father never leaves me and is always inviting me to return and enter
into his merciful heart, where I will fine consolation and love.
