Thought of the Day May 17, 2022 Peace I give you
Jesus told the apostles and us: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you." (Jn 14:27) What is this peace? Jesus says that his peace is different from the peace the world gives? What is the difference? The peace of the world is dependent on others and on things, both of which are undependable. Here today and gone tomorrow. How long has the world been looking for peace and to no avail. All we have to do is look at the news and see there is no peace in the world or among people that lasts. On the other hand, the peace Jesus gives depends on his love for us, which is faithful, true and enduring. It is an inner reality that comes from relationship with God and is not dependent on circumstances around us.. It is "the peace that surpasses all understanding" as Paul tells us. This peace is a foretaste of the eternal life we will experience in heaven with God. "And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. And death shall be no more.. And neither mourning, nor crying out, nor grief shall be anymore." (Rev. 21:4) We don't have to wait for it. Jesus gives it to us. It is a fruit of the Spirit's presence and life within us. We don't have to chase after this peace. We have to embrace and enter into the life that Jesus gives us, a sharing in his own divine life.
