Thought of the Day August 25, 2022 Godly spirit vs. worldly spirit
"Christians must be on guard against the spirit of worldliness that confuses and blurs the lines between what is good and what is evil. The Holy Spirit brings you to God and if you sin, the Holy Spirit protects you and helps you to get up. But the spirit of the world brings you to corruption, to the point that you can’t distinguish between what is good and what is bad; it is all the same, everything is the same.” (Pope Francis)
All of us are constantly confronted with the Spirit of God's lead and the spirit of world's attractions. Sometimes the latter is very subtle and gradual in its influence in our lives. Many people externally look like they are following the lead of the Holy Spirit in their lives, but in reality internally they are worldly at heart. Jesus reminds us that we are in the world but not of the world. When we are both in and of the world then we have a worldly spirit dictating to us our values. Jesus addressed this in his distinction between the narrow gate and the wide gate or the narrow road and the broad road. The narrow road is that of following the lead of the Holy Spirit. It is the road of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and obedience to the will of the Father. The broad road is that of following the lead of the world, which distracts us from the Lord. The former leads to eternal life with God. The latter leads to eternal destruction. Do we find in our hearts any residue of this worldly spirit? Do we see ourselves struggling with it but still keeping our eyes on the Lord?
