There is a difference between being successful and bearing fruit. Jesus is calling his disciples not to be successful in the eyes of the world but fruitless spiritually. Rather, he invites us to live fully by being spiritually fruitful, even if we are materially poor. For where your heart is, there is your treasure. If our heart is focused and possessed by material success and financial security, then we have our treasure, which is here today and gone tomorrow. But if our heart is focused and possessed by doing that which will lead us into eternal life with God, then our treasure is life with God. Jesus said it well: "What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? What could one give in exchange for his life?" (Mk 8:36-37) What is our priority?
