Thought of the Day March 1, 2024 The obedience of Jesus
We continue to reflect on the mystery of the Passion of Jesus. What can we learn and strive to imitate? In his humanity, the cross was a experience of obedience to the will of God. St. Paul stated it thus: "he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross." Philippians 2:8
Jesus himself said many times that he came to do the will of the Father, because of his great love for the Abba. If the Son was obedient to the Father, can we do less? Fruitful obedience flows our of love, not obligation or fear of punishment or hope for reward. When Jesus said that we are to take up our cross and follow him, this is what he meant. In obedience is life and freedom; in disobedience there is death and bondage. Obedience unites our will to that of God for us. Disobedience separates us from God and leads us spiritually naked.
