Thought of the Day May 20, 2024 A disciple/witness
What Jesus told the Apostles on Easter Sunday, he intends for us as well. "As the Father sent me, so I send you." Easter reminds us of our Baptismal commitment as disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. Pentecost reminds us of our Confirmation commitment to be disciple/witnesses of the Lord Jesus to the ends of the earth. As Jesus poured forth his Spirit on the Apostles at Pentecost, so he poured out his Spirit upon us at our Confirmation. Having been filled with the Holy Spirit, the Apostles began to witness about the risen Jesus they had encountered with signs and wonders confirming their witness. We, too, have received the same gifts of the Spirit, so that as Jesus' witnesses we can share who Jesus is to us to others. As St. Peter reminds us, "Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence." (1 Pet 3:15-16) Are we active or passive disciple/witnesses?
