Thought of the Day September 16, 2024 Choose whom you will serve

By 2:06 PM

“Whatever a man prefers to God, that he makes a god to himself.” St. Cyprian of Carthage

The First Commandment is “I am the Lord, your God, you shall not have strange gods before you.”  Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matthew 6:24) How do we know if we have other gods in our lives? Is God always first in our life or are other things or people more important at the moment than God? Is prayer a priority or is work? Is my pleasure a priority or the service of others? Is the Word of God my rule of life or the word of others? Is God the connecting thread in my life or an afterthought? Like the ancient Greeks, I may have many gods, including an unknown god, as a way of covering my bases. But there is only one God. Choose and serve him above everything else.
