When we are mistreated or falsely accused, our human tendency may be to wish the worse on the other. We both suffer. We add our sin to the sin of the other. That’s not the way of a true disciple of Jesus. St. Paul reflected the thought of Jesus, when he wrote, “Bless those who persecute [you], bless and do not curse them.^” (Romans 12:14) The world is not transformed by the “eye for eye” mentality. Only love can break the strongholds of evil, for love endures but evil will eventually fail.
