What is the desire of your heart? If it is not "we shall be like God, for we shall see him as he is", then our life will be a waste. "The entire life of a good Christian is in fact an exercise of holy desire. You do not yet see what you long for, but the very act of desiring prepares you, so that when he comes you may see and be utterly satisfied." (St. Augustine) We were created by God to be with God eternally. He is the beginning and end of every life. Keeping this goal before us, will help us to make the decisions necessary to be able to fulfill it by God's grace. Yes, the journey is long and difficult with many obstacles and false detouring signs to draw away from the goal. But our attitude needs to be that of St. Paul's: "This one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind, and stretching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the prize to which I am called in the life above."  Bon voyage!
